Learning to Hear His Voice
Learning to Hear His Voice
I was trying to pray this morning, and no matter how hard I tried, invasive thoughts, problems, and distractions kept getting in the way! I finally changed my location, and that shift allowed me to have the conversation with Jesus that I so desperately needed.
One of the greatest challenges I face in my spiritual life is not the absence of God’s voice, but the noise that competes with it. My thoughts, responsibilities, distractions, and emotions can easily drown out what God is gently speaking.
I have to intentionally create space to hear Him.
Over time, I’ve learned that hearing God is less about striving and more about stillness. It’s about slowing down long enough to become aware of His presence and attentive to His Word. When I consistently spend time in Scripture and prayer, I begin to recognize the tone of His voice more clearly in my everyday life.
God doesn’t usually compete for my attention with force. Instead, He invites me into a relationship. His voice often comes with peace, conviction, clarity, and alignment with His Word. The more familiar I become with Scripture, the more equipped I am to discern whether what I am sensing is truly from Him.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27, NIV)
This verse reminds me that listening is part of belonging. If I am His, then I am called to recognize His voice—not perfectly, but progressively. That voice recognition grows through relationship, not performance.
I’ve also realized that obedience often begins with listening.
Before I can follow, I must hear. Before I can act, I must receive. When I rush past listening, I increase the likelihood of acting out of assumption rather than alignment.
Today, I want to be someone who pauses long enough to hear. Not just in moments of crisis or decision, but in the ordinary rhythms of life. Whether I am working, resting, or interacting with others, I want to cultivate an awareness that God is present and speaking.
Listening is not passive—it is an active posture of humility. It says, “God, I trust that Your perspective is better than mine, and I am willing to be led.”
I hope that describes your heart today, too!!! Let’s pray together:
Lord, quiet the noise in my life so I can hear Your voice more clearly. Train my heart to recognize Your leading and give me the discipline to listen before I act. Help me to trust Your direction and follow You with confidence and humility each day. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Never forget, my friend,
You are a miracle!
