Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
– Luke 22:39-42 (NIV)
Today’s commentary

Jesus was about to step into the greatest challenge of His earthly identity – His death upon a cross. As this event unfolds we see the Son of God still caring for his disciples. He took them to a familiar place; He prepared them to resist temptation; then He shielded them from the agony that His soul was beginning to experience. The cross was the most barbaric form of execution of His day, yet the greater cup that Jesus was to drink was the cup of God’s wrath against sin. Jesus obedience at the Garden of Gethsemane redeemed Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden. We can now experience the care of God in our lives because the greater Adam has paid the price for the rebellion of mankind.
