Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. – Mark 4:18-19 (NIV)

We may think that Christianity is threatened by atheism or other religions, but Jesus tells us that one of the great threats to the faith is consumerism. Our need to live in security, comfort, approval or power will choke out the call to follow after Jesus. Our desire to “take it easy” may be one of the greatest obstacles to our Christian growth.
