Nehemiah 1:6 – let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying

let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you.
– Nehemiah 1:6 (NIV)
Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Author of Making Sense of the Bible
As Nehemiah processed the fallen state of his homeland, Israel, he began to confess his sins, the sins of his family and his nation. This may seem unusual, but the Bible tells us that prayer is not meant to be limited to our individual needs. God wants us to pray for our family, our neighbors, and our nation. When was the last time that you fell on your knees and prayed over a news report? You may find that God is waiting for those who look beyond themselves and are willing to take the time to pray over the conditions around them.
