But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
– Jonah 4:10-11 (NIV)
Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Author of Making Sense of the Bible
Jonah was a very reluctant prophet. He hated the people of Nineveh for their barbaric actions against other tribes, yet that hatred distorted Jonah’s views of God’s compassion. Jonah was more concerned about a vine than thousands of lives that God wanted to reach. How about us? Do we pray for judgment upon others while we accept grace and forgiveness for ourselves? Just like Jesus would teach much later, Jonah challenges us to see our enemies through the eyes of God and love them.
