John 11:14-16 (NIV)

So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

The reference to Thomas as the doubter is well earned. Thomas is the voice of criticism and unbelief throughout gospel of John. Yet Jesus chose Thomas. In a sense, Thomas represents the doubter in all of us. Jesus wanted Thomas as one of the disciples to show that He can work with anyone, no matter how skeptical they may seem. Jesus can turn the doubter in all of us to the ones who fall on our knees and proclaim, “My Lord and my God!”
