Matthew 2:16 (NIV)

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

Today’s commentary

This part of the Christmas story is very unpleasant. Herod, a bloodthirsty king, realized that the king that the Magi were searching for had been born. From that point on, Herod was determined to do everything that he could to kill Jesus. Jesus Christ disturbed the status quo from His birth forward. He challenged political views, power structures, and economic systems. In the same way, don’t be surprised when your life is challenged as you follow Jesus Christ. The establishment of His rule can be very unsettling.
