Jonah 1:12-13 (NIV)

“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.” Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.

Today’s commentary

When Jonah tells the crew the solution to their storm, they only try to row harder. It seems that even when God presents to us what we need, we do everything but what God asks us to do. This is the human condition from Genesis to Revelation, but in our rebellion of self-efforts, God met us: Jesus was the ultimate One thrown into the storm of God’s judgment. Jonah was pointing to the One who would be in the heart of the earth for three days then rise in victory to empower us to obey God from the heart.
