Flashback to the 1980's

Dear Friend,

We recently published the 1980s edition of Flashbacks. This summer, I want to explore how secular movies can illustrate important themes for Christians. Today, I'm reflecting on The Karate Kid and its depiction of virtues that align with Christian principles.

Respect for elders, humility, perseverance, peacemaking, and discipleship are the key virtues depicted in the movie.

  1. Respect for elders (Hebrews 13:17) - Daniel learns to respect Mr. Miyagi, who not only teaches him karate but also, has important life lessons. Hebrews 13:17 counsels us to “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.”

  1. Humility (James 4:6) -  Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel karate through seemingly menial tasks like waxing cars, painting fences, and sanding floors. James 4:6 reminds us that, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

  1. Perseverance (James 1:12) - Daniel's story is one of perseverance as he faces numerous challenges. His determination mirrors the Biblical exhortation found in James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

  1. Peacemaking (Matthew 5:9) - One of the pivotal teachings of Mr. Miyagi is that karate is for defense only, emphasizing the importance of being a peacemaker. In Matthew 5:9, Jesus preaches, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." In a world quick to resort to violence and retribution, the message is clear: true strength lies in the pursuit of peace.

  1. Discipleship (2 Timothy 2:2) - Finally, the mentor-disciple relationship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel embodies the timeless Christian principle of discipleship. In the New Testament, Paul mentors Timothy, guiding him through letters full of wisdom and instruction. In 2 Timothy 2:2 Pau’s advice to Timothy, "And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."

I may not be a film critic, but I hope you can appreciate that secular movies can be used to make illustrations about the body of Christ. These virtues mirror important teachings found in the Bible.

On a different note, the summer months are always challenging for giving, and I am so grateful for your generosity and support over the years. Would you prayerfully consider stepping into the gap during this season?

Thank you for being part of our support network. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

God loves you and so do I,
