Dear Friend, Today I’d like to reflect on what Scripture says about angels. Angels are celestial beings created by God to serve as His messengers and agents. They’re benevolent figures who intervene in human affairs, providing guidance, protection, and divine messages. Here are five key roles angels perform in our lives:
1. Messengers of God (Luke 1:28-31) - Angels serve as messengers, delivering God's words and decrees to humans, providing guidance, warnings, or announcements of significant events. Gabriel delivers the divine message to Mary that she will conceive and bear a son, Jesus, the Son of the Most High. This emphasizes the angel's role in conveying God's plans and facilitating key events in the Christian narrative.
2. Guides and Providers (Exodus 14:19) - An angel of God who had been traveling in front of Israel's army withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night, the cloud brought darkness to one side and light to the other side; neither went near the other all night. Peace was made possible by the presence of these angels. 3. Protectors (Psalm 91:11-12) - Angels protect people from spiritual and physical harm. Psalm 91:11-12 states, "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; on their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” I’ve had a life-saving encounter with an angel, and I invite you to read about it in this month’s Powerlines. 4. Executors of God’s Will (Revelation 7:1) - Angels execute God's judgment and will, maintaining divine justice and order. Revelation 7:1 describes angels holding back the four winds to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or sea or on any tree, illustrating their role in executing God’s commands related to the cosmos and humanity's fate. 5. Comforters and Reassures (Luke 22:43) - Finally, angels serve as comforters in times of uncertainty. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, facing imminent death, Luke 22:43 tells us that an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. This emphasizes God's care for His children through angelic support. Angels are both servants of God and benefactors of humanity, aiding in the spiritual journeys by enacting God’s will and providing grace and protection.
