After setting two still-intact college football records as a running back at Idaho State University, he played eight seasons in the NFL. His professional career surpassed 5,000 all-purpose yards and more than 30 touchdowns.

After retiring due to repeated concussions – and nearly dying from them – Merril worked as an ESPN on-air personality for two decades. He shared his Christian faith unashamedly on a decidedly woke television network.
