A Prayer for the Dreamer Think back to when you were a kid. You latched onto an idea of what you wanted to be, and there was no doubt in your mind you would accomplish it. Your dreams have most likely changed since then, and the way you think about them probably has too. When we consider our dreams as adults, it can feel discouraging. Instead of romanticizing them, we realize the journey will be hard. Sometimes, it doesn’t even feel worth it. Because a lot of time, the journey involves working a less-than-glamorous job, pinching pennies, working insane hours, or enduring years of school. When this happens, we can start to think our dreams and passions are wrong. That we weren’t ever meant to follow our dreams, because if we were, it wouldn’t be this hard. Right? All of us have heard the saying, “The journey is more important than the destination.” Cliché, we know; but, it’s almost always true. Most of the satisfaction of accomplishing our dreams comes from what we went through to reach them. Our dreams are big and there’s a lot of effort that goes into accomplishing big things. But there’s also purpose in the journey because God is walking the path with us. Not only does he use the journey to grow us and teach us, but he uses it to change our perspective: Dreams don’t always stay the same. Knowing all of this doesn’t make it any less hard. But the good news is, we’re not walking through it blindly. God knows our destination, and he wants us to lean on him to guide and grow us on the way.
