Surviving the Holocaust was only the beginning

Dear Friend, Born in Odesa in 1939, Alexander was just a toddler when the Nazis invaded Ukraine. He, his mother, and siblings fled east, walking 75 miles to find shelter at his grandmother’s home. There, hidden in a dirt-floor basement, they survived in the dark. Mice bit them. Food was scarce. Alexander developed rheumatism, and his tiny body became skin and bones. He survived the Holocaust. He went on to become an engineer and raise two sons. And just two years ago, at the age of 84, he made Aliyah—immigrating to Israel from war-torn Ukraine. Today, Alexander is one of the precious residents in our home for Holocaust Survivors. With tears in his eyes, he showed us the furniture he received—and proudly smiled to reveal his new teeth, provided free thanks to the support of friends like you. “I am so excited to be able to move into your community,” he said. “People have been so kind to me. I finally have enough food and medicine—and everything else I need.” But thousands more Holocaust Survivors in Israel are still suffering.
