Hope in Suffering
Hope in Suffering
No one likes discomfort. Though we may understand on the surface the idea of “no pain, no gain,” our first instinct is often to numb or avoid pain. This instinct to dispel discomfort often distracts us from making much of Jesus. Suffering comes in many forms: from persecution by old friends who are not supportive of a Christ-centered life, to ridicule from popular society. Fighting injustice, speaking against lies, loving others, and seeking to end poverty all require much effort and often personal discomfort—but they give so much gain.
When we are willing to endure such suffering to amplify Jesus, we show that the purpose of our lives is to glorify the Father. When we suffer for Him, we suffer with purpose: to join with Christ and free ourselves from the sins that hold us captive. Because Christ came to earth, suffered, and defeated sin, we have the power to put to death our selfish desires and accept suffering that comes as we live for God’s will and for His gain.
Are you suffering right now for the sake of Christ? Take heart and know that He is with you and will lead you in His will.
