As Jesus Loves
As Jesus Loves
Toward the end of Jesus’ time on earth, He spoke with His disciples about a new standard of love. Prior to this conversation, it was understood that we should love each other as we love ourselves, but here Jesus takes that a step further. He explains that His followers are to love as He loves.
We hear this so much in our Christian life, but what does it really mean for us? Jesus’ love far surpasses societal norms. His is a love that is unconditional, outside of circumstance. It’s a love that is rooted in the acceptance we receive from Jesus, not from our friends, family, or the world. The strength to love in this manner is only birthed from the grace we’ve been given. And because it’s so far outside the norm, we will need to pursue it and constantly refocus on it throughout our lives.
Why does Jesus tell us that loving one another is a “command,” not a suggestion? Because this holy love is how the world recognizes what Jesus is like and that we are His followers. Our love for our brethren shows God’s grace more clearly than anything else. So refocus your heart and mind on this supernatural love, and let the world come to know Jesus through your love.
