Do You Have a Place to Rest?

Do You Have a Place to Rest? Everyone needs shelter. A place to step out of the elements. A place where vigilance can finally relax and the body can unclench. Survival mode keeps us exposed—always scanning for the next threat, bracing for the next blow. Even when we are physically safe, our souls often remain on high alert. Evans, my African friend I introduced earlier this week, lived in a small metal home, no larger than a garden shed. The walls were thin. The roof offered little protection from heat or rain. Yet on the door was a simple cross. And inside that space, he felt secure. Home, for him, wasn’t about square footage or stability as the world defines it. It was about presence. “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:1–2. NIV) Psalm 91 does not promise a life free from storms. Instead, it promises shelter in the storm. God does not merely provide cover when things get overwhelming; He invites us to dwell with Him—to live under His shadow, close enough to feel His nearness. Survival mode tells us to build our own refuge. To fortify our lives with control, planning, and self-reliance. But self-made shelters eventually crack. God offers Himself instead. A refuge that cannot be shaken. A fortress not built by human hands. Evans didn’t worry about what tomorrow would bring while sitting in his home. He trusted the One who had carried him through every day before. That trust created rest. Rest isn’t found in the absence of trouble. It’s found in the presence of God. Where are you seeking refuge right now—and is it bringing true rest? Are you finding a covering in your own self-sufficiency or in an ALL-SUFFICIENT God? Let’s pray together... God, be my refuge and fortress. Teach me to dwell close to You and trust Your covering over my life. Amen. You are a miracle! Grant Fishbook
