Leadership Requirements If this list of attributes sounds demanding, it should. Leadership is serious business—and a testament to how Christ loves and builds His church. The qualities in today’s verse point to a type of leadership marked by consistent service and powered by grace. The risk is too great and the cost too severe for those overseeing the flock to be weighed down by worldliness. How many churches have been seared by scandal, shaking the faith and witness of those in the church? It is critical that those in church leadership take responsibility for their actions and words—their impact goes far beyond just one person. To represent Christ and His church in a leadership position is to be fiercely committed to one’s growth in holiness for the sake of others. Of course, that’s not to say that everyone in the church shouldn’t exhibit these qualities, leader or not; but those in leadership certainly must. Meditating on the requirements of the overseer, let us come to Jesus, the Chief Overseer, and ask for His grace and power upon our leaders.
