The Sacrifice of Praise

The Sacrifice of Praise Under Old Testament law, sacrifices were continual, costly, and imperfect. Yet they were the only way sinful people could approach God. The rules and requirements to make sacrifices were strict, and one misstep could have dire consequences. One sacrifice the Israelites made each year was the firstfruits offering. The people would bring the first of their harvest, the first sign of reward from their year of work, and present it at God’s altar (Deuteronomy 26). This was their declaration of His supremacy and provision over all their lives. By giving His perfect blood, untainted by sin, Jesus forever satisfied the need for this old system of sacrifice. Because He has given all, we can now give to God from a place of joy, not obligation or fear of mistakes. Instead of sacrificing physical fruits, we now live sacrificially. Our firstfruits are our praise, and by giving ourselves to a life of worship we declare that Jesus is worthy of it. Paul reminds us to “do good to and share with others” as part of this sacrifice. As we praise, let’s share that fruit with those we meet, telling others of the One we serve.
