A Prayer for Daily Bread One of the hardest parts of getting older is realizing how much time is spent worrying. Will I have enough money? Am I making the right career decision? What happens if this relationship doesn’t work out? What if I never get where I hoped I’d be? It’s easy to spend so much time trying to secure the future that we miss the gifts God is providing today. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he didn’t tell them to ask for next year’s bread or even next week’s. He taught them to pray, “Give us today our daily bread.” It’s not as though God doesn’t care about our future, or that he’s asking us not to either…but trust is practiced in our present moments and circumstances. Throughout Scripture, God has a habit of providing enough for the next faithful step. Manna in the wilderness. Bread for Elijah. Food for thousands out of just a few loaves and fishes. Daily dependence is one of the primary ways God forms our trust in him. So, if you’ve been carrying tomorrow around today, maybe this verse and prayer can help you loosen your grip just a little.
